Brutal School Crossing Guard Attack to Spur New Safety Legislation
School crossing guards play a vital role in safeguarding our children on and near school campuses. A recent attack on a crossing guard in Darby Borough has spurred one state senator to promise that he will move forward with legislation that would help protect children’s safety by protecting crossing guards against future attacks.

The Attack in Darby Borough
According to news reports, a crossing guard who was helping elementary school students cross the street near their school directed a driver to stop. Video footage shows the driver, who had exited his car, confronting the crossing guard and striking her in the head, knocking her to the ground. The crossing guard told police that she was knocked unconscious as a result of the attack.
The alleged attacker was later traced to South Carolina, where he was arrested and held for extradition to Pennsylvania.
State Senator to Introduce Legislation
A state senator has promised to introduce legislation that would increase children’s safety while in their community. The legislator proposes treating crossing guards the same as first responders when they are attacked. These laws increase the penalties for anyone attacking a first responder while the first responder is working as such. While police, firefighters, EMS personnel, teachers, and others are currently covered by laws that raise an attack on them to a felony level (aggravated assault), school crossing guards are not. The safety of our children includes the safety of school crossing guards.
