It’s Often Harder for Rural Domestic Violence Victims to Speak Up

Posted by Joseph Lento | Feb 10, 2025 | 0 Comments

Speaking up about domestic violence and seeking protection from abuse are never easy undertakings, no matter who a victim of mistreatment may be. Yet, specific circumstances can make the act of pursuing safety tougher for some victims than others. For example, a recent report released by the Center for Rural Pennsylvania details why it is often more challenging for rural domestic violence victims to report their situations to law enforcement than it is for victims who reside in urban settings.

Whether you live in a rural or urban part of Pennsylvania, if you're suffering as a result of domestic violence, contact us for support by calling 888-535-3686 or reaching out to the LLF Law Firm online as soon as you can do so safely. There is nothing more important than safeguarding your well-being. Our team can help you achieve this goal quickly and effectively.

Why Are Rural Victims at a Disadvantage When It Comes to Reporting?

Living in a small community can be a uniquely rewarding experience. Yet, it can be difficult to maintain a sense of privacy in such settings. Living in an urban area allows people to benefit from relative anonymity. When victims of domestic violence reside in urban settings, they are unlikely to run into the kinds of social and practical concerns that rural victims have. For example, rural victims may find life to be uniquely difficult if their abuser is beloved, holds a position of authority, and/or is related to many members of their small community. As a result, many rural victims remain silent about their mistreatment because they worry that others in their community will find out about their circumstances if they report their situation and seek a Protection From Abuse (PFA) order against their abuser.

Additionally, it is worth noting that law enforcement agencies are smaller in rural communities. Therefore, if a domestic violence victim mistrusts even one or two officers in their community, that can serve as a genuine barrier to reporting. While victims of any kind may fear not being taken seriously by the police and/or being blamed for the abuse that they have suffered, the practical consequences of such stigmas can impact family relationships, financial stability, and connection within one's community more dramatically in a small town. Isolation can affect one's ability to remain employed, to secure housing, and to maintain one's well-being. A risk of isolation as a result of reporting can be particularly acute when there are fewer people around.
