When you spend years intertwining your life with someone else through marriage, divorce can be an understandably long, tedious, and frustrating process, even in amicable cases. The Long Battle

Jolie initially filed for divorce from Pitt in 2016. Since then, Jolie and their six children gradually vacated every property that the former couple shared as their lawyers sought to reach a settlement. Despite the high-profile nature of the divorce and its resolution, Jolie has opted to keep her thoughts and feelings as private as possible, communicating with the public mainly through her lawyer. He informed news outlets that the divorce was finalized in December 2024 and described Jolie as “exhausted” but “relieved” as she turns her energy toward helping her family move on from the ordeal.

By contrast, Pitt had a few thoughts he was willing to share on the divorce.

“My personal life has always been in the news,” he said in an interview with GQ, describing the public discussions of his personal affairs as “a fly buzzing around a little bit.” That is, though annoying, he had become accustomed to it as a normal aspect of his celebrity status.

Later, he added that for him, the finalization of his divorce was not “that major of a thing. Just something coming to fruition. Legally.”

Why Did the Divorce Take So Long?

Since Jolie and Pitt spent 12 years together and are both widely respected entertainers boasting remarkable fortunes, their assets alone would have been tricky to untangle. However, the proceedings were further complicated when Jolie accused Pitt of domestic violence and abuse against her and their children during a 2016 plane trip. She kept the details largely between her and her legal team, but the allegations triggered an investigation by the FBI.

Although the FBI decided that there was no probable cause to file criminal charges against Pitt, Jolie still fought to reduce his child custody rights before agreeing to a settlement. Since domestic violence can heavily influence a judge’s decisions regarding divorce resolutions, all of Jolie’s accusations and requests had to undergo thorough research and consideration, prolonging the entire divorce process.
